Yoma Yangon International Marathon (YYIM) has grown from strength to strength over the years – from a race of just around 1,000 participants back in 2013 to becoming the largest participatory running event in Yangon with over 6,000 runners in 2016. The annual event is jointly organised with First Myanmar Investment (“FMI”) and Yangon City Development Committee (“YCDC”).
YYIM has become one of the city’s most recognised annual sporting event. Held in January each year, it’s a healthy way to kick-start a new year. This year, we hope to increase the registration numbers to 8,000 participants as we believe YYIM is a great platform to bring together runners, supporters, volunteers, companies and the Yangon community together. An important part of the event is the joint effort in giving back to the community or as we call it ‘Run for Children. We invite participants and the public to raise money and donate to support youth and truly make a difference in their lives.”
In 2016, the funds raised for charity were channelled to three projects. The first was improving the welfare of children living and studying at the Su Taung Pyae Youth Development Centre in Thanlyn Township, Yangon. Donation was made to supplement education which creates a brighter future for more than 1,500 children, providing them an opportunity to flourish and develop in a healthier and safer environment.
The second project was YCDC Non-Profit Child Day Care Centre for Low Income Citizens where we contributed financial support to YCDC for its early childhood care and kindergarten education to over 100 children across six Yangon locations. A third project was donating to the Aung Za Bu Youth Development Centre in Sin Chan Village, Koh Mhuu Township, which provides education for 1,044 students, many of whom are orphans from conflict affected areas.
In 2017, we continue to aim to raise funds for underprivileged children in Myanmar with the support of all runners, supporters, volunteers, corporates and the community.
YYIM 2017 participants are encouraged to raise money for the charities by personal sponsorship or donation.
